CEO Paul Geddes said staff had already exceeded their fundraising target, with more than $8,500 raised and two weeks of collections remaining.

“The small token of having our heads shaved is the least we can do in support of those going through tough times,” he said.”We hope we’ve helped the cause and raised awareness.”

Theatre nursing unit manager Bree Brown explained that the staff-driven initiative came about in a random conversation about how staff could help four workmates undergoing treatment for cancer.

“We really wanted to do something more than helping out with the cleaning or cooking, so we came up with the idea of raising money and having a head shave,” she said.

Mrs Brown said the rapidly rising total was raised through months of social media networking, raffles, staff barbecues and cake stalls. By the end of the month, the total is expected to exceed $10,000.

Hospital housekeeper Julie Purnell said she was happy to put her hand up after being personally affected by the deaths of her brother, father, mother-in-law and a close friend to cancer.

“Through the whole process I’ve learned a lot about the Leukemia Foundation and where the money actually goes.

“It won’t just go into research, but for patient support, travel to appointments and other little things that make life easier for people with leukemia and their families,” she said.

Thousands of people throughout NSW and the ACT will shave or colour their hair this month to raise funds to support the 12,000 Australians currently diagnosed with leukemia, lymphomas, myeloma and other disorders.
