GOLF just got a hole lot easier at Morisset.

A new format has been developed for the ancient game, and Morisset Country Club reckons it might just catch on.

“What we’re introducing is the golfing version of Twenty20 cricket,” chief executive Ian Taylor said.

Wednesday Twelves is a mixed competition of stableford golf played over 12 holes on Wednesdays.

It costs $12 to play, there’s $12 share cart hire, and there’s a 12-inch (30.5cm) preferred lie on the fairways and in the rough.

Perhaps the biggest innovation is at the hole.

The enlarged hole was supposed to be, you guessed it, 12 inches in diameter.

“We measured the holes and they’re actually eight inches (20.3cm),” Mr Taylor said.

But it makes a big difference.

During our photo shoot for this story, Mr Taylor played some putts to the hole from various distances and said it felt like he couldn’t miss.

Participants in the Wednesday Twelves competition don’t have to be members.

Players hit from the yellow social tees.

Handicaps for the modified competition are separate to the Golf Australia handicap system.

“We think this new format will particularly appeal to people who are time poor and can’t afford to give up five hours to play competition golf on a Saturday,” Mr Taylor said.

A round of Wednesday Twelves golf typically takes between 75 minutes and two hours to play, he said.

Social golfers who currently enjoy a hit with friends without strictly abiding by all of the rules of golf, or scoring properly, can now take their social golf to the next level.

“It’s a chance for those golfers to test themselves against their mates and win something,” Mr Taylor said.

The new format provides an inexpensive introduction to competition golf, he said.

Golfers can tee off any time between 6am and 4pm.

A one-off registration fee of $24 applies for non-members.
